Unleashing the Leader in You

When you are at work, do you get frustrated because things don’t seem to be happening the way they’re supposed to be? They are people milling around but accomplish nothing. And in the daily hustle and bustle, have you felt that goals just remain as goals. Then maybe its time for you to stand up and do something about it.

Most people are content just to stand around listening for orders. And it isn’t unusual to adopt a mentality of always following a leader. But maybe, somewhere inside of you, you feel the desire to make make a difference – to be the head, not the tail. Then maybe leadership is your calling.

Some people believe that great leaders are made, not born. Yes, it may hold true that some people are born with natural talents. However, without drive, without enthusiasm, without experience, and without practice, leadership skills cannot be developed.

You must also remember that good leaders are continually working and studying in improving their leadership skills. It takes commitment to improve constantly in whatever endeavor the person chooses to take.

First, let us define what leadership is. To be a leader, one must be able to extend his influence over others to accomplish a goal, or an objective. He plays a role in organizing and maintaining cohesion of a group.

Contrary to what many people consider, it is not all about power. It is not about coercing people or driving them using coercion. It is about encouraging them in achieving the goals of the organization. It is putting everyone on the same page and helping them see the big picture. It is becoming a leader, not being a boss.

First of all, it is important that people follow you. How is this accomplished?

People follow others when they see a clear sense of purpose. People will only follow you when they see a clear path. Remember that stickers in automobiles? The one that says, don’t follow me, I’m lost too? The same holds true for leadership. If you don’t know where you’re headed, chances are people will not follow you at all.

You yourself must what the vision of the organization is. Having a clear sense of organizational structure, knowing who the bosses are, who to talk to, the organization’s goals and objectives, and how the it works is the only way to show others you know what you are doing.

Being a leader is not what making others do things. It’s about who you are, what you know, and what you do. You are a reflection of what you’re subordinates must be.

Studies show that one other bases of good leadership is the confidence your followers have of you. If they trust you, they will be with you whatever it takes for the organization to succeed.

Trust and confidence is built on good relationships, trustworthiness, and high ethics.

The way of dealing with your subordinates, and the relationships you build will lay the foundation for the strength of your group. The stronger your relationship, the stronger their trust and confidence is in your capabilities.

Once you have those things, you may now proceed to communicate the goals and objectives you are to undertake.

Communication is a very significant key to good leadership. Without this you can not be a good leader. The knowledge and technical expertise you have must be clearly imparted to other people.

Also, you can not be a good leader and unless you have informed decisions. You must be able to analyze things, weigh the advantages and disadvantages of any decision, and actively seek out a solution.

It is this judgment that your people will depend upon. Therefore, good decision-making is vital to the success of your organization.

A leader is not a do-it-all person. You should not claim to know everything, and you should not rely upon your skills alone.

You should recognise and take advantage of the skills and talents your subordinates have. It is only in this stage that you will become one cohesive unit.

Remember being a leader takes a good deal of work and time. One cannot do this in a snap. Remember, also, this in not just about you. It is about you and the people around you.

Do you have the drive to be a leader? Do you have the talent to work closely with people? Then today is your day. Take your stand and be leader today.
